Designer Spotlight: Jay Jenkins

Designer Jay Jenkins of Jenkins Baer Associates goes above and beyond to craft striking and personalized interiors for each of his clients. Jay, his skilled team of professionals and our galleries have collaborated for years to thoughtfully choose artwork for his spaces that extends the character of each room and completes their aesthetic. In this interview with Jay, explore the designer’s creative vision and learn a little bit about the philosophy behind his work.

What excites you about interior design?

JJ: That every project offers a new opportunity and a new way to develop an answer to what the project needs.

What inspires you as a designer?

JJ: Quality, elegance, appropriateness and ease.

What do you love most about what you do?

JJ: I have to say the shopping is pretty great. That and the moment the raw space becomes a room and  seeing the smile on the client’s face.

How has your design style evolved through the years?

JJ: With age comes experience and with maturity comes refinement.

What is your design philosophy?

JJ: Try and enjoy the process as much as the product. That and you can’t have too much white or Fortuny.

How do you incorporate art into your design?

JJ: Given that I love beautiful neutral and textural rooms, the art is the layer that adds color, personality and tension to a room that otherwise would be lifeless.

What are your favorite design trends?

JJ: We generally shy away from trends. That said, I’m loving grey as the starting point for a space…never a cold blue grey, but rather a beautiful deep warm green grey…very modern and very old at the same time. It’s actually the perfect background for beautifully framed art.
